5 sports injury symptoms you must never neglect

  Admin | March 24, 2018

You were playing a quick game of tennis - when you overstretched to hit that ball and ended up spraining your ankle. Or perhaps you were on your usual morning jog, when you experienced a weird twinge in your knee. So when does your sports injury deserve a visit to the doctor and when can you get away with rest and home care? Read on to find out!

1) Swelling or joint locking

Usually, the most obvious sign of a sports injury is swelling, tenderness and discoloration. If either of these are severe, it’s better to visit a doctor. However, remember: when the swelling occurs within the joint, you may feel the swelling, but there may not be any outward signs. If your joints get locked, or you hear a popping or cracking sound, or you find your movement greatly restricted, it’s time to go to the doctor. Similarly, if your joint pain doesn’t resolve itself within 6 weeks, your doctor should hear from you.

2) Inability to walk, move or instability

This one is a no-brainer: If your injured joint feels unstable, even after the initial recovery period, or if you’re experiencing weakness, especially while moving your limbs, you must visit the doctor immediately. Unstable joints could be caused by a ligament injury, while weakness is generally associated with a muscle or tendon tear, all of which are serious injuries.

3) Pain that does not go away or progressively worsens

It’s already been a few days since the incident, but your pain is only getting worse and not letting you sleep at night. If this is the case, go to the doctor at once!

4) Numbness and tingling

These symptoms suggest nerve compression – and should never be ignored. If you’re experiencing numbness or tingling, get your injury checked out immediately.

5) Chronic pain

Joint aches that surface when you walk up a flight of stairs or post a marathon are normal; and often common among elders. But if your joint pain is chronic and impacting your daily life, it needs your doctor’s attention. Plus, when it comes to your joints and bones, it’s always better to be pro-active. So, if you’re above 40 and are suffering from aching bones and joints, it’s best to visit a doctor and prevent further damage, especially if it turns out to be arthritis or osteoporosis.

All said and done, you are the best judge of your body – so if you feel that your injury warrants a doctor’s visit, don’t hesitate to visit one. Safe is always better than sorry!
