Perhaps one of the scariest nightmares for all of us is being told that we need surgery. However, by following the correct pre- and post-operation measures, you can ensure the best outcomes and a quicker recovery. Above all, don’t stress – apart from not helping in the least, stress will only ruin your health further.
1) Eat well and stay healthy
It’s always easier to recover from surgery if you’re reasonably healthy before you undergo one. Make it a point to eat home-cooked, nutrient-rich food and exercise, to the extent you can, before your surgery. Your doctor will also find it easier to operate on a healthy body.
2) Ask questions
Now is a good time to be a know-it-all – get as much information as you can on your surgery, but make sure it’s from a trusted source. Feel free to ask your doctor for detailed explanations and take family members along, to serve as a second pair of ears.
3) Be prepared, but don’t panic.
Know the risks and possible complications of the surgery – it can help you plan well for every eventuality. At the same time, don’t panic or get depressed, have faith in your doctor and expect the best. Involving friends and family in your discussions can also help you get organized, while lifting your spirits up.
4) Get a second opinion
Not sure surgery is the right option? Get a second opinion and some much-needed peace of mind. In any case, it’s always a good idea to get a second opinion, even if you’re convinced about the necessity of the surgery. You may get some fresh insights which could steer your diagnosis and treatment in a better direction.
5) Follow all pre- and post-operation instructions to the T
Have you been recommended to undergo physiotherapy post-surgery? Or to eat a certain kind of diet before and after? Or to get a certain kind of scan? Then do as instructed! In addition, remember to follow sanitation procedures strictly, to stave off infection. Trust us when we say it makes all the difference between a quick and healthy recovery and a slow and incomplete one.
6) Build a strong support network
During difficult times, you need strength to get up and move ahead. The best way to get this strength is to borrow it from friends and family members. If you’re scheduled for a surgery, delegate caregiving responsibilities to a few loved ones and make sure you have people around who can help you and cheer you up.
7) Take care of your mental health
A sick mind leads to a sick body, so make sure you’re in a healthy state of mind. Surgeries can generate anxiety, fear and depression, but surrounding yourself with optimistic, cheerful people will help you think positive too. Don’t hesitate to lean on friends and family for support; you can also seek out counselling sessions or talk to your doctor about your fears. Most importantly, don’t brush your worries or anxious thoughts under the carpet – speak up and seek help immediately.
Follow the instructions outlined by the doctor and then don’t worry – believe that all will be well - and it will!
