Are you TATT (Tired All The Time)? That’s right, feeling tired is such a common syndrome that it has earned its own acronym – TATT. If you feel TATT, even after sleeping well and regulating your diet, it’s time to check if you’re suffering from any of these 5 conditions.
Calcium deficiency
Are you experiencing fatigue, tingling in the extremities, muscle cramps or loss of appetite? You could test positive for calcium deficiency. This deficiency generally passes under the radar, especially since calcium is easily available from food sources. Consult with a doctor if you’re worried.
How to get tested for calcium deficiency: Consider taking a blood calcium test. For extreme deficiencies, consider a DEXA Bone scan too.
Anaemia (And it’s not just iron-related):
If you’re feeling weak and suffer from pale skin, chest pains, light headedness, cold hands or feet and breathing difficulties, you could be suffering from an iron or vitamin B12 deficiency. So why are iron and vitamin B12 crucial? Because these two elements help in the production of haemoglobin and red blood cells, which transport oxygen to every part of your body.
How to get tested for anaemia: Consider getting a Complete Blood Count (CBC) blood test.
Chronic Fatigue
Chronic Fatigue is thought to be triggered by a viral or bacterial infection, but the exact culprit behind this condition is yet to be pinned down. Notwithstanding the cause, chronic fatigue is widely accepted as a genuine medical condition, with symptoms including weakness, tender lymph nodes, loss of appetite, an inability to concentrate, headaches and muscle and joint pains.
How to get tested for chronic fatigue: Since there is no specific test, your doctor will have to rule out all other conditions that could cause similar symptoms, like lupus and multiple sclerosis.
Sleep Apnoea
This is a serious sleep disorder where a person’s airways collapse for a few (10 or more) seconds while they are sleeping, causing them to stop breathing. People with sleep apnoea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, which results in a serious lack of oxygen in the body. Sleep apnoea sufferers will generally experience drowsiness, tiredness, irritability, restless sleep and learning and memory difficulties. Chronic snoring is a strong indicator of sleep apnoea.
How to get tested for sleep apnoea: Get a Polysomnography (PSG) sleep test done in the lab or at home.
Thyroid Disorder
Sometimes, the thyroid gland doesn’t secrete hormones in the right quantity. This could leave one feeling weak and tired all the time. Other symptoms of a malfunctioning thyroid gland include fatigue, muscle pain, weight gain, vision problems, changes in body temperature or changes in appetite.
How to get tested for thyroid diseases: Ask your doctor about getting a TSH, a Free T3 and Free T4 blood test.
Most importantly, it’s good to stay informed, but don’t self-diagnose or self-medicate. Make sure you always consult a qualified doctor first.
