One of the hardest things for people to understand about loved ones suffering from depression is that it can be an entirely invisible condition. This does not make it any less serious, or worse, something to be ashamed of. Today, about 4.4% of the world’s population suffers from depression according to the World Health Organisation; and we see many Indians too coming forward to speak about this condition, which until now was a deeply entrenched social stigma. It can be hard to see someone you love suffer from this condition and not understand it, so here are a few things to keep in mind if your loved one has been diagnosed with depression.

1. Depression can happen to anyone

First, it is important to know that depression can happen at any age and to anyone, from adolescents to the elderly. Various factors can make different people susceptible to depression; and these include childhood trauma, lifestyle changes, social and economic factors, or even postpartum depression in new mothers. It is crucial to understand and accept this, so that you do not pressure your loved one to try and change their mindset or think happy thoughts to get better. Remember, the causes are often deeper and more complex than commonly assumed and therefore require professional attention.

2. What not to say

People suffering from depression can often find even the most everyday task quite burdensome. Sometimes, patients will want to sleep all day and avoid any social or human interaction. Please keep in mind that it will not help to pressure them with statements such as, “Just get over it,” or “It’s all in your head,” or “Others have it worse,” or “Can’t you see how lucky you are and what a wonderful life you have?”

3. What to say

Some patients of depression report feeling pressured to interact with their family and friends. What you say is also as important as how you say it. Make sure your tone is always understanding and that you are never making your loved one feel like they are not being listened to.

You can tell them that no matter what, you will always be there for them. You can tell them that you love them and will do whatever they need you to do. Asking how you can help and really listening to their wishes can go a long way in helping them feel better. It is always recommended to be open and non-judgemental in these situations.

4. Seeking professional help

While it is important to do whatever you can to help assuage your loved one’s depression, ultimately, only a trained medical professional can provide concrete guidance on how to alleviate the condition. Do your research before picking a psychologist or psychiatrist; get second opinions and references from people you trust before settling on someone. Ensure that, above all, the patient is extremely comfortable with the psychologist or psychiatrist and that they have no qualms about the treatment itself.

5. Making plans

Sometimes, supporting your suffering loved one by making plans and setting out tasks and fun things to do together can make a world of difference. While this may not be true in all cases (always ask before taking any steps), it may be a welcome change for many patients. You could go on short trips for a change of scenery, take long walks in nature, play with dogs if you are animal lovers, or go for a movie or a fancy meal. Making and sticking to task lists can also be a good way to keep the patient on track.

6. Exercise

Working up a sweat, going to the gym, doing yoga or just taking a walk has shown to lessen the symptoms of depression. Exercise releases feel-good chemicals in the body; and these can often combat the low feelings that accompany depression. Incorporating exercise into one’s everyday lifestyle is something that can really aid those suffering from this condition.

7. Healthy lifestyle

Needless to say, prioritizing better lifestyle habits and everyday self-care will help people tackle depression better. Doing a ‘digital detox’ and a ‘social media cleanse’ is one way to achieve a significant reduction in anxiety caused by information overload. In addition, eating healthy, nutritious food, following a regular circadian rhythm  and establishing a routine could provide some relief from the low lows that depression results in.

Above all, remember to remain patient, to be careful in the words you use and in your attitude, while taking care of a loved one with depression. This condition can make people more vulnerable and sensitive, but with the right treatment, management and support from loved ones, depression is a battle that we can win against.
